Every one of Del Rey’s records has the “Parental Advisory: Explicit Content” warning on the cover. I get chills every time I hear “This is my commitment/My modern manifesto.” She also opts to censor a word in one of this track’s lines, something she has never done before. So, when “Get Free” arrives at the album’s conclusion, you feel Lana’s relief as she says goodbye to the burdensome past and hello to the bright future. I think “In My Feelings” is placed here in the story as a signal to the listener that the album’s first half is merely the groundwork. I have been listening to her music for years, and this is the first time I can remember her being annoyed with the guy.
It all builds to a chorus where she vents her frustration about repeatedly getting stuck thinking about him. The verses have lyrics about “sobbing in cup of coffee,” then she realizes she is “wasting time” brooding about the guy. However, unlike the old Lana, the new Lana is over it. It is another song about dwelling on a punk who broke her heart. Groovy and moody, “In My Feelings” feels like the song that was missing from Born To Die. These are the points where the record’s dynamics of self-pity and hope reach their peaks. Inspired by the contrast between the love she experienced at Coachella 2017 and the animosity displayed in media headlines in recent years, Lana’s sphere of focus moves outside of herself for the first time in her career. After brooding on her problems for a few tracks, the turning point comes with “Coachella – Woodstock In My Mind,” a track written a few months before the record’s release. “Love” and the title track serve as an introduction to the album’s general message before taking us inside Lana’s head with “13 Beaches.” This place has been the center of attention for the past four records (I count Paradise as its own thing), but unlike the others, Life moves beyond.
Lust for Life has a storyline that will appear familiar in some places but more like a one-eighty in others. Just compare the aesthetic of the music video for “Summertime Sadness” with that of “Love,” and you will see what I am talking about. While the record retains those Lana-esque qualities the fans love, Lust for Life is more about a transition period, being in a place of wanting to change, and beginning the journey to climb out of the dark times. Most of her music is about beauty, sadness, and beauty in sadness. Lana Del Rey is a fascinating and rewarding persona to study for people experiencing difficult times in life. Since then, her haunting and cinematic style has contributed to memes galore and the soundtracks for films such as Maleficent, The Age of Adaline (a cut was played in the trailer that never made it to the final product), and Tim Burton’s Big Eyes. Many call her voice “depressing,” while others prefer the word “sultry.” The woman actually has a song called “Sad Girl.” In line with the theme of sadness, she rose to fame with the one-of-a-kind Grammy-nominated “Young and Beautiful” from Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby, followed by an unauthorized radio-friendly remix of “Summertime Sadness” from her first major-label record, Born To Die. Her pout has been–and still is–her signature look. You probably know Lana Del Rey as the saddest-looking/sounding pop star you have ever seen. If you know me, you know I care more about this woman than any other artist on the music scene. It has been two years since Honeymoon, and in today’s world, two years is a long time to make fans wait without a tour to help hold them over.
